We are fortunate to call some of London’s most fabled landmarks our neighbours. Read on for our top tips of what to do in the area, before or after dining with us…
Once known as Londinium during Roman times, the City of London has been a hotbed for trade and cultural exchange for nearly two millennia. London Wall is an impressive reminder of the fortified boundaries that once protected the city during Roman rule – and if you are keen to explore this further, a host of artefacts can be seen at the London Mithraeum, just by Bank station.
Earning its nickname of the Square Mile during Victorian times, this patch of London is perhaps now best known as being the city’s financial district. And our home at 68 King William Street – a former bank built in the 1920s – is a resplendent example of the architectural styles of the time.
One of the best ways to take in the sites is by walking; and we are fortunate to be strategically positioned in the heart of the city, and just 10 minutes from the banks of the River Thames, crossed by its many famous bridges including Tower Bridge itself.
To our east lies the Tower of London – perhaps one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in London – built by William the Conqueror in 1070 AD. Fast forward 600 years and the Great Fire of London destroyed much of what had stood in the city. Yet, standing proud since 604 AD, St Paul’s Cathedral survived and is open year-round, from carols in December to daily eucharist services; you can also walk up to its famous dome for some striking views of the city.
And if views are your thing, then nearby Sky Garden is well worth a visit for unparalleled vistas – tickets are free, but it’s advisable to book in advance.
Daily walking tours take place and are a great way to learn more about the city, if you should be so interested!
Famed for its brutalist structures, the Barbican Centre is approximately 20 minutes’ walk from King William Street. Home to concert halls, galleries, a cinema and the Conservatory – which is a plant lover’s dream –there’s something for every taste.
And situated just a brisk walk across London Bridge, you can find Tate Modern, with its iconic Turbine Hall, a plethora of free collections to explore, and an impressive line-up of internationally acclaimed artists. Further along the Southbank, you can also find the Southbank Centre, National Theatre and the Old Vic.
Slightly closer by on the same side of the river, you can find the beautifully appointed Wilton’s Music Hall, founded on a mission to bring West End glamour to the East End. If you’re attending a show or exhibition, simply let our team know when making your booking, so we can be sure to accommodate you in ample time.
Also within walking distance are some of the best markets the city has to offer. Whether it’s the historic Leadenhall or Petticoat Lane, Spitalfields or Columbia Road Flower Markets closer to Liverpool Street, a whole host of shops, cafés and delis are all on our doorstep. And just across the river lies Borough Market – we enjoy a pitstop at Neal’s Yard Dairy and St John’s Bakery.
Nearby, you can also find the Royal Exchange, which hosts the likes of Fortnum & Mason, Ladurée, Montblanc and more for shopping – as well as the popular Rosslyn should you be in need of a caffeine fix.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite – maybe with a stroll up and down the river stopping off at some of the sites mentioned above – you may wish to dine with us. And if you should happen to be in the area at the weekend, then you may wish to indulge in our Afternoon Tea or Sunday Roast offerings.
The Wolseley City is situated on King William Street in the heart of the Square Mile, less than a minute walk from Monument Station, 3 minute walk from Bank Station or a 6 minute walk from London Bridge Station.
